WHAT ARE SPIRITUAL STUDY CIRCLES?
Picture

"Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth. "
- Baha’u’llah

Friends and neighbors in Humboldt County and around the world gather in study circles and discover how the Baha’i teachings can be applied to different aspects of their lives and the life of their community.  Adults and older teens, whether a Bahá’í or not, are welcome to take part. They connect study of Baha’i Sacred Texts to acts of service. Topics include: the spiritual nature of life, the basic features and history of the Baha’i Faith, how to build unified communities, and how to teach children and mentor youth. In their study circles, neighbors share insights with one another and design service projects relevant to their communities.

The first of these books is called "Reflections on the Life of the Spirit", and it consists of three units: Understanding the Baha’i Writings, Prayer, and Life and Death. It explores questions such as:
  • What is significance of our deeds?
  • What effect do prayers have?
  • What is the purpose of life?
  • What is the nature of our soul?
  • How does our soul progress?

These study circles have no prerequisite, are free to participate in, and can take place anywhere; from family homes to social settings, even on Zoom.  Through theoretical and practical components, members of a study circle develop deep friendships, a shared vision, and learn strategies designed to improve the spiritual and material conditions around them.

Study circles often form amongst individuals with common concerns in their community. For example, right here in Eureka, there is a study group that has been flourishing for over a year, comprised of women of all different spiritual backgrounds, each a mother of young children.  As they consider the study materials, they are looking through the lens of raising spiritually resilient children. Deep meaningful friendships have formed between the mothers and children. They have become a community of close knit friends, supporting each other in their everyday lives.
